맥어드레스란 무엇인가?

맥어드레스는 OSI Reference Model에서 두번째 계층인 Data Link Layer에서 사용되는 주소로 간단히 말하면 네트워크 카드의 물리적 주소를 나타내며 Media Access Control (MAC)의 약자이다.

이 맥어드레스의 주소 생성 규칙은 아래와 같다.

As mention in Chapter 2, the first six digits of a MAC address are associated with the vendor, or maker, of the NIC. Each vendor has one or more unique sets of six digits. These first six digits are commonly called the organizationally unique identifier (OUI). The last six digits are used to represent the NIC uniquely within the OUI value. In theory, each NIC has a unique MAC address. In reality, however, this is probably not true.

즉, 총 12 자리의 영숫자로 구성된 고유의 주소이며 처음 6 자리는 제조사마다 서로 고유의 주소를 가지며 마지막 6 자리는 각 네트워크 카드의 고유의 번호를 나타낸다.

이제 이 벤더 리스트를 구할 수 있으면 본인이 사용하고 있는 랩탑 혹은 데스크탑의 NIC카드의 제조사를 알아낼 수 있을듯 하다.

위 주소에 접속하여 내가 사용하는 맥북의 NIC카드 제조사를 알아보도록 하자. 우선 맥북의 맥어드레스를 알아보면,

이제 위의 URL로 접속한 후 처음 6자리를 Hexadecimal 형태로 변경하여 찾아보면,
